Confusion marks formation of nat'l security council

Friday, 6 July 2007

The government policymakers and their spokesmen are making contradictory statements about formation of a national security council (NSC), creating scope for confusion in the public mind, reports bdnews24.com.
The Law Adviser, press secretary of the Chief Adviser and a senior official of the Chief Adviser's Office (CAO) Wednesday made different statements about NSC.
About six months after the present government's takeover, Law Adviser Mainul Hosein said, "There are national security councils in different countries, including India and Pakistan. Earlier there was such a council in Bangladesh also, but it was not active."
"The NSC will pave the way for direct talks between the military and civil administration on any issue related to national interest. A proposal regarding formation of the council was sent to the CAO about two months ago," he said.
Replying to a question, Mainul said, the council could be formed through an executive order. He advised that the chief adviser's press secretary Syed Fahim Munaim be contacted for more details.
However, when contacted by phone, Munaim said, "I am not aware of the matter at the moment."
