Congestion at Kadamtoli intersection
Sunday, 21 June 2026
Heavy traffic congestion at the Kadamtoli intersection has been causing immense suffering to commuters for years. Located on the southern side of the Babubazar Bridge in Keraniganj upazila, Kadamtoli is one of the busiest commercial areas in the region. It is home to numerous business centres, markets, shopping malls, wholesale garment hubs, and many other commercial establishments. Vehicles bound for the southern and south-eastern parts of the country also pass through this route to reach their destinations.
In addition, vehicles travelling to Nawabganj and Dohar upazilas use this road. As the area is situated on the bank of the Buriganga River, a large number of people also pass through the Kadamtoli intersection every day to cross the river.
Countless battery-operated and CNG-run auto-rickshaws are parked haphazardly on the roads in blatant disregard of traffic regulations, causing severe congestion from morning until midnight.
As a result, gridlock frequently occurs at the intersection, bringing traffic in all directions to a standstill. At times, the tailback stretches from Kadamtoli to Tantibazar in Old Dhaka. Passengers often remain stranded on the Babubazar Bridge for hours.
The bridge provides access to Islampur Market, which is renowned for its wholesale clothing trade. The fruit market, paper market, Mitford medicine market, and Chawkbazar wholesale market are also located nearby.
Not only passengers but also a large number of businesspeople travel to Old Dhaka every day. However, severe traffic congestion during peak hours wastes valuable time and hampers business activities.
It is hoped that the authorities concerned will take immediate and effective measures to address the situation and ensure smooth traffic movement in the area.
