FE Report
The first of Agrahayan of the Bangla calendar year will be observed every year as the 'National Agriculture Day' in the country, aiming to help attain self-sufficiency in food production through boosting the overall agricultural output.
In this backdrop, the government has taken necessary steps to observe the Agriculture Day tomorrow (November 15) for the first time in the country in a befitting manner, Agriculture Secretary M Abdul Aziz said at a press conference in the city Thursday.
The decision to observe the Agriculture Day has been taken following an announcement made by Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed to this effect while delivering his speech on the occasion of the World Food Day on October 16 last, the Agriculture Secretary added.
"The National Agriculture Day is aimed at recognising the contributions of our farmers who make their allout efforts to ensure the country's food security despite facing various hurdles," he said at the press conference at Bangladesh Secretariat.
The country's agriculture sector is now facing a new challenge due mainly to the adverse impact of the global climatic conditions, Mr Aziz said.
The local farmers made a breakthrough in production of 'Boro' rice, helping the country recoup the loss of 'Aman' crop caused by two successive floods followed by the cyclone 'Sidr.'
Referring to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), he said the country's latest Boro output increased by 17 per cent over the previous year to cross the mark of 17.5 million tonnes.
The press conference was also told that the government had taken necessary steps to ensure uninterrupted supply of adequate seeds, fertilisers and other agro-inputs to the farmers to help boost the country's agricultural output.
Chief Information Officer (PIO) Iftekhar Hossain and other senior officials of the Agriculture Ministry and the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) were present at the press conference.
According to the Press Information Department (PID), the state-run BTV, Bangladesh Betar, all private television channels and radio stations will air various programmes highlighting the importance of the day.
The print media will also publish special supplements, articles and news items on agriculture.
