Constitutional amendment to \\\'pressurise\\\' judges, says BNP
Saturday, 13 September 2014
The 16th Amendment Bill has been introduced to keep the judges 'under pressure', senior BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Mia claims, reports bdnews24.com.
At a discussion he alleged Friday that the ruling Awami League (AL) aimed at 'monopolising' power.
Law Minister Anisul Huq tabled the bill on Sept 7 to restore Parliament's power to remove judges.
It has been sent to the standing committee of the law ministry for scrutiny within seven days.
Rafiqul Islam claimed the law minister had 'lied' while speaking about the purpose of the bill.
"He (Huq) lied by claiming the bill aimed at giving back Parliament its power to remove judges," he alleged.
Mr Mia claimed Bangabandhu had 'introduced autocracy' through the 4th Amendment.
He alleged, "The incumbent government has introduced the 16th Amendment bill to keep the judges under pressure.
UNB adds: BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah alleged that the 16th amendment to the Constitution is aimed at keeping Supreme Court (SC) judges under pressure.
"The then President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had got a hold of power to impeach judges through bringing an amendment to the 1972 Constitution. Now, the present government has brought the bill to keep judges under pressure. The goal is one and identical and that is to cement the government's grip on power," he said.
On September 7, the Constitution (16th amendment) Bill, 2014, seeking to empower parliament to remove Supreme Court Judges on ground of proved misconduct and incapacity, was placed in the House.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry is scheduled to submit its report on the bill on Sunday next.
