Construction of elevated expressway begins in city

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday inaugurated the construction work of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Kutubkhali on Dhaka- Chittagong highway.
"Motor vehicles would ply on the elevated expressway by 2018," he told reporters after inauguration of the construction work of the expressway at Kawla under Aairport Police Station in the capital.
Italian-Thai Public Limited Company chairman Premchai Karnasuta, Thai Ambassador to Bangladesh, project director and officials concerned were present at the function.
He said the total length of the expressway is 47km including 27km ramps with the lane measures at 20km at the straight length.
"This day can be termed as memorable because the construction work of the elevated expressway has started after overcoming many hurdles", he said.
Quader also handed over the land properties to the construction companies' concerned officials.
"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the Padma Bridge in 2018. The work of the elevated expressway would also complete by then," he said.
The minister said the Metro Rail would also start its operation in 2019 and that is why the construction works of these projects are going on in-full-swing following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's instructions and guidelines.
According to Bangladesh Bridges Authority, the expressway starts at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and runs along the Airport Road via Mohakhali, Tejgaon and Moghbazar to Kamalapur Railway Station before connecting with Dhaka-Chittagong highway via Sayedabad and Jatrabari.
