Construction of Padma Bridge begins soon, JS body told

Construction work of the much-awaited Padma Bridge will begin soon, as preparation of detailed design of the bridge over the mighty river Padma is going on in full-swing, reports BSS.
This was informed to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Communications at its 2nd meeting, held at the Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban Sunday with committee chairman Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the chair.
Holding discussion on a report put forward in the meeting regarding progress of the construction works of the bridge, the meeting was informed that JICA has already completed a feasibility study to this end.
Besides, the meeting held an elaborate discussion on construction of 750-metre Teesta Bridge. It was told that nearly 43.50 per cent works of the bridge have already been completed.
The meeting asked the authorities concerned to complete the entire construction works of the bridge within the stipulated time.
The meeting also held detailed discussion on the tender invitation process, selection of contractors, process of maintenance, and appointment of experts of Bangabandhu Bridge.
Referring to the cracks developed recently in the bridge, it asked the Shetu Department and the ministry concerned to take necessary steps to realise compensation against the design consulting farm, if it is found guilty with the design.
Meanwhile, the meeting observed one-minute silence in honour of the departed soul of parliament member Momtaz Iqbal from Sunamganj-4 constituency. She died of heart attack Friday.
Committee members Md Omar Faruk Chowdhury, Md Zillur Hakim, Mohammad Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, Md Abu Zahir, HM Golam Reza, Md Golam Maula and Nazrul Islam Monzu attended the meeting.
Communications Secretary ASM Ali Kabir, Shetu Department Secretary Md Abdul Karim and officials concerned were present.
