Construction work of Chapail Bridge going on in full swing

GOPALGANJ, June 29: Construction work on Chapail Bridge over an erosion prone river Madhumati on Gopalganj-Narail-Khulna highway is going on in full swing for opening in November this year.
Chapail Bridge over the Madhumati river is 588.65 metre long, 7.30 metre wide with 14 spans, 13 piers, 2 abutments and 70 girders at the rate of 42 metre distance each of the bridge.
While contacted Arun Kumar Chowdhury, Executive Engineer, LGED, Gopalganj, told the FE on Sunday that the work of the bridge was at the final stage. About 90 per cent work of the bridge has already been completed.
TANTIA-OTBL (JV) a joint venture construction company took the responsibility of the construction work of the bridge under the supervision of the Department of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). The company started work from November 2011 last with an estimated cost of Tk 576.10 million (Tk 57 crore 61 lac), sources said.
Besides the TANTIA-OTBL (JV) Company, a team of 170 persons including experts, engineers and skilled manpower have been selected to inspect the overall progress of the bridge.
Earlier, TANTIA-OTBL was given the responsibility of selecting the bridge site, considering river erosion, changing of river flows along the bridge site. Because of continuous erosion huge area of the land along the riverside is devoured into the river every year.
