Consumers\\\' rights being violated in Jhenidah

JHENIDAH, Mar 16: Consumers' rights in almost all sectors, including food, education and health in Jhenidah are being violated greatly. Consumers here are not conscious enough to realise the services they verily deserve.
Speakers at a seminar on World Consumer Rights Day 2015 held at the deputy commissioner's auditorium in Jhendiah on Sunday expressed grave concerns over the adulteration of food items and consumers' deprivation of proper services from different professionals. The theme of the day this year was "Consumers' Rights to Healthy Food."
Md. Shafiqul Islam, DC, Jhenidah was present at the programme as the chief guest with ADC (General) Nasrin Jahan in the chair.
Representatives of various sectors in Jhenidah attended the function, and many of them delivered speeches on the occasion.
The chief guest in his speech said, "To preserve the rights of consumers, a law was passed in 2009. It is a law for us to implement for public. Consumers' rights include rights of getting due service in every sector of life such as education, health and food."
President of Jhenidah Chamber of commerce Md. Nasir Uddin said adulterated food items are harming us a lot. "We will welcome mobile courts fining traders involved in unethical business," he added.
Aminur Rahman Tuku, president of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), Jhenidah branch told the seminar that various items approved by BSTI ten years back do not now necessarily mean that they are being produced well.
A representative of the bakery owners said that ammonia, a very harmful element for human body, is being used excessively in most of the bakeries in the district. Babies are specially fond of cakes and the parents unknowingly destroying their children's health, he added.
ADC (General) Nasrin Jahan said consumers have their civic rights to protest sales of substandard things by the businesses. The local administration will always stand by the consumers to punish the culprits if complaints are lodged, she added.
