Consumers' rights linked to good governance

Sunday, 16 March 2008

Speakers at a seminar in the city Saturday said good governance, the rule of law, and an improved state of human rights are the preconditions for establishing the consumers' rights in the country, reports BSS.
They said the soaring price of essentials is the prime concern of the consumers at the moment, and the government alone cannot solve such an acute problem.
"The people should change their food habits like those in the developed countries to reduce the import of certain high-priced goods," they said while addressing a seminar marking the International Consumers' Day 2008.
The seminar titled "Role of Media in Establishing the Rights of Consumers and Protecting the Interest of Investors" was held at National Press Club auditorium.
Bangladesh Journalists' Forum for Consumers and Investors (BJFCI) and Bazaar Information and Development (BID) jointly organised the seminar.
Former Finance, Planning, Commerce and Telecommunication Adviser to the caretaker government Dr Shoeb Ahmed attended the seminar as the chief guest.
In his speech, Dr Shoeb said the rising population is one of the main causes for the price hike of essentials in the country. To keep prices at a tolerable level, we must check our population growth and take concerted efforts.
BJFCI President Faruk Ahmed read out the keynote paper, and presided over the occasion.
The function was addressed, among others, by chief adviser of ATN Bangla Saiful Bari, editor of the Daily Naya Diganta Alamgir Mohiuddin, editor of Daily Somakal Abed Khan, general secretary of Jatiya Press Club Kamal Uddin Sabuj, managing editor of BID Shamim Ara, deputy managing director of Ashyian Land Development Saiful Islam, managing director of Western Marine Shipyards Shakhawat Hossain, and managing director of Shajib Corporation MA Hashem.
Head of news and current affairs of ETV Shah Alamgir, chief reporter of the Daily Jugantar Rafiqul Islam Ratan and MA Matin took part in the discussion.
BJFCI Vice President Md Enamul and Secretary General Anisur Rahman also addressed the seminar.
Abed Khan said before establishing the rights of consumers we have to ensure good governance first in the country for resolving the problems like price hike of essentials.
Protecting consumers' rights is an important issue for all people, but it cannot be established without ensuring democracy in the country.
Shah Alamgir said a strong association of the consumers is a must for protecting the interest of the buyers.
In his keynote paper, BJFCI President Faruk Ahmed said insufficient market information and misleading news help stakeholders to exploit consumers and mislead small investors. The 1996 stock market crush is a bright example of this, he said.
