Container scanners at Chittagong port
Wednesday, 15 October 2008
THE much talked about installation of the container scanners began at the Chittagong seaport to meet the requirement of importing countries. The work, started in 2003 during the previous government, had stopped due to lack of fund. The government is funding the scanners after the related multilateral capital donor refused to finance it on the plea of a re-tendering the project. The National Board of Revenue expects the work to be completed in two months.
No doubt, with the scanning facilities in place, Bangladeshi products would be more acceptable to the importing countries. Installation of the container scanners at port were suggested by the European Union (EU) countries and the US. The EU has set the deadline for the mandatory installation of it by 2009 and the US by 2010. The NBR deserves thanks for doing it before the deadlines. The NBR was for upgrading the container handling facilities in the country's prime seaport that caters to more than 80 per cent of its imports and exports.
