Contempt of court proceedings sought against Jamaat

Friday, 2 January 2015

The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) submitted Thursday a petition pleading to draw contempt of court proceedings against Jamaat-e-Islami and six persons, reports BSS.
A prosecution team led by advocate Rana Dasgupta submitted the petition to the office of the tribunal registrar at about 3.30 pm.
The prosecution in the petition said after the pronouncement of the verdict in the trial of Jamaat assistant secretary general ATM Azharul Islam, defence counsel Tajul Islam held a press briefing and made adverse comments against the verdict. Jamaat too called two-day shutdown in protest of the verdict committing contempt of court.
Other six accused are Tajul, Jamaat's acting ameer Maqbul Ahmed, acting Nayeb-e-Ameer Prof Mohibur Rahman, acting secretary general Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Abdul Jabbar, Md Atikur Rahman, president and general secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student-wing of Jamaat, respectively, prosecutor Zead-al Malum told the news agency.
The prosecution brought the matter to the knowledge of the first tribunal Wednesday and the court asked them to make the plea in writing. Following that prosecutors Rana, Malum, Sultan Mahmud Simon, Tureen Afroz, Rezia Sultana and Tapos Kanti Baul submitted the petition Thursday.
