Contempt petition filed against election commissioners
Friday, 19 December 2008
An application for drawing contempt-of-court proceedings against Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda and the two other election commissioners was filed Thursday with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) over election-related complications, reports UNB.
Maj (retd) Manzur Quader of BNP filed the contempt petition, as the respondent-contemners didn't comply with the order of the Supreme Court directing the Election Commission (EC) and the returning officer of Sirajganj to accept his nomination and allow him to contest the December 29 parliamentary elections from Sirajganj-5 constituency.
On December 14, Chamber Judge of the SC passed the orders staying the operation of the impugned dismissal order of the High Court (HC) that had upheld the EC decision cancelling his candidature by the returning officer.
He was debarred by the returning officer from the race on grounds of his being bank-loan defaulter as per strict rules of the RPO framed under the politico-electoral reforms in the interim period. The Chamber Judge also had asked Manzur to file a regular leave-to-appeal petition against the High Court dismissal order by January 15, 2009.
A four-time-elected Member of Parliament (MP), Manzur in his contempt petition submitted that the contemners were reluctant to dispose of the matter although they received the SC order.
