Continued marketing system in char areas round the year urged

GAIBANDHA, May 27 (BSS): Speakers at a function here on Tuesday stressed the need for continuing the marketing system in char areas all the year round to help the char dwellers economically.
"The char inmates incur losses economically at the time of natural calamities like flash flood, cold wave, and drought for not transporting and selling their agricultural produces in the markets at fair prices", they said.
They made the comments while addressing a discussion meeting on 'Keeping Market System in chars continued during pre and post disaster period and Our Doings in Disaster Risk Reduction' at the training centre of Khamarbari agriculture office of the town here.
Switch Contact, a reputed organization, arranged the function under the project of the Making Markets Work for Jamuna, Padma and Teesta Chars (M4C) in consortium with Practical Action with the financial support of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
Acting Sadar upazila chairman Rashida Begum addressed the function as chief guest and Sadar upazila agriculture office M.  Sadiqul Islam and acting president of Gaibandha Press Club and district correspondent of BSS Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman were present as special guests.
With deputy director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Mir Abdur Razzak in the chair, the inaugural function was also addressed, among others, by project monitoring officer of Disaster and Climate Risk Management in Agriculture Shah M.  Asaduddowla and market development officer of M4C project M. Elias.
M. Elias presented the keynote paper through multimedia projector and said the project was being implemented in the chars of four upazilas-Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Shaghata of the district from 2012.
