Contractor Mithu arrested for health sector graft

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Motazzerul Islam Mithu from the capital's Gulshan area on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the health sector corruption during the Awami League regime.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (media and public relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said a team of Detective Branch (DB) nabbed Mithu from a house in Gulshan area through a special raid. He has been hiding there for long.
Mithu is accused of embezzling millions of taka through irregularities, tender fraud, and misappropriation of funds in various health sector projects. He has been under surveillance of the law-enforcement agencies since the government change.
According to the DB officials, Mithu is one of the main perpetrators of corruption in the health sector. He is also implicated in embezzling and laundering funds through a syndicate in the sector.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against him on Wednesday, accusing him of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 750 million (75 crore).
The ACC investigation report said Mithu, owner of the companies named Lexicon Merchandise and Technocrat, acquired immovable assets worth over Tk 180 million through purchase and lease of agricultural land, plots, flats, and houses.
Additionally, his movable assets -- including shares and investments in various companies, vehicles, bank balances, gold ornaments, furniture, and electronics -- amounted to over Tk 574 million. In total, his movable and immovable assets are valued at over Tk 758 million.
Furthermore, family expenditures under Mithu's name amounted to over Tk 714 million, bringing his total assets and expenditures to approximately over Tk 1.47 billion.
