Conversion of diesel-run vehicles can reduce huge import bill

Every year Bangladesh can reduce millions of dollars in fuel import cost through conversion of diesel run vehicles, marine engines and generators to run on compressed natural gas (CNG), discussants said at a workshop.
Besides, they said by converting to CNG the cost of operation of any vehicle, marine engine or generator can be reduced at least by 50-70 per cent.
Navana CNG Ltd, a sister concern of Navana Group, Monday organised the workshop on 'Diesel Engine Conversion into CNG' at Hotel Purbani in the city.
Shafiul Islam Kamal, chairman of the Navana CNG Ltd, presided over the daylong workshop.
Sumit Kumar Shah, assistant general manager, and Shayful Islam Mamun, assistant project engineer (diesel), conducted the workshop.
About one hundred businessmen including those of the country's transport sector took part in the workshop.
Speaking at the workshop, Shafiul Islam Kamal, chairman of the Navana CNG Ltd, said more than 72 per cent cost can be reduced by converting a diesel run vehicle into CNG.
Since 2002 till date he said, "we have converted over 25,000 vehicles into CNG."
Besides those workshops at Kalyanpur in Dhaka, Bagura, Sylhet and Chittagong, Kamal said they have established a big conversion workshop in the city's Gabtoli furnishing all the latest modern technology.
