Cool response to half-day hartal call in Rangpur

Friday, 20 July 2007

RANGPUR, July 19 (UNB): Classes in some educational institutions were not held and few business establishments kept shutters down in the town Thursday morning in response to half-day hartal called by Juba League and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) to protest Monday's arrest of Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina.
Movement of vehicles was normal. Law enforcers patrolled different parts of the town.
Tension prevailed among the residents at the call of hartal, which is prohibited under the present state of emergency.
Earlier on Wednesday, some Jubo League and BCL activists brought out a procession in the town and distributed leaflets demanding release of Sheikh Hasina.
