Cooling tower for nuclear power plant

Comprehensive views on cooling towers for power plants, an important but usually neglected issue for any nuclear power plant, was published in an English language daily on August 30, 2015. The question that arises immediately is whether we should be so irresponsible as to go for a potentially dangerous U-236 fuelled nuclear power plant. This writer strongly believes that we better not opt for this potentially dangerous option for power generation. Instead, we should rather go for absolutely safe and radiation-free U-238 fuelled-power plants which can be easily procured from China.
The usual tendency over the years, in case of any power plant, is to ignore the cooling tower, and its maintenance, cleaning and upkeep are left to the junior most and rather unskilled and unqualified personnel in most power plants. This writer has seen and faced this problem in his career inĀ  operation and maintenance of many in-house power plants in the then EPIDC and later in many private sector industries, both multinational and local, in a career spanning over forty years.
As for the proposed nuclear power plant, if we are serious enough to go for it, we must give very high priority to the cooling circuit and specially the cooling towers. They are usually overlooked as a simple piece of equipment, and except for fans, pumps and coolers are generally given the least priority. This should not be allowed to happen, since the possibility of radiation leakage is seriously related to any U-236-fuelled nuclear power plant.
Even after assuming that such a possibility is a highly unlikely event, we should not be foolhardy to go for the potentially fatal U-236 power plant. Where radiation leaking potential always exists, we can not and MUST not ignore the cooling tower as of secondary importance. This writer feels that we should have twice the number of cooling towers than needed to totally cover all aspects of radiation hazards in any U-236-fuelled nuclear power plant and given the unpredictable heavy rains and floods (like this summer). Since these are low cost equipment as such, and the cooling tower is a locally built concrete structure, the cost involved would be nominal. This writer's opinion is based on close personal interactions, with many in USA more than a decade back, where they also stressed that in their personal view, it is better to have a number of small U-238-fuelled nuclear power plants that are absolutely radiation-free, for a country like ours that has very limited technological base. In overall national interest, let us better be safe than sorry.
