Cooperatives 'can play vital role in controlling' prices of essentials

RAJSHAHI, Nov 3 (BSS): Speakers at a discussion here today (Saturday) called for undertaking collective efforts for smooth functioning of the cooperatives, which could be an important means of alleviating poverty from society.
The discussion was organised on the occasion the 36th National Cooperatives Day-2007 at the local Zila Parishad auditorium.
About 500 cooperative members from different districts of the division and officials concerned attended the discussion.
Organised by the Divisional Cooperatives Department, Commissioner of Rajshahi Division Shafiul Alam addressed the discussion as the chief guest.
President of Moon City Cooperative Housing Society Nazrul Islam presided over the discussion.
Deputy Commissioner Khalilur Rahman, Joint Registrar of Cooperative Department Amiya Kumar Chatterjee and Divisional Head of Grameenphone SM Iskandar Hossain also spoke on the occasion, among others.
The speakers said cooperatives have a vital role in marketing of essential commodities and in controlling their prices.
Similarly, the poor and marginal farmers, along with day labourers, have scope to change their lot through bringing themselves under cooperatives.
In this context, they said importance should be given to strengthening the cooperatives with extending requisite support to end the tyranny of the middlemen in the marketing of essential commodities.
In this way, they said, the farmers would also be benefited with fair prices of their produce.
Earlier, the participants brought out a huge procession that paraded the city streets in Kazihata area marking the day.
