Cop among 2 killed as prison van overturns

At least two people, including a policeman, were killed and six other cops injured as a prison van overturned on west side link road of Jamuna Bridge in Sirajganj Sadar upazila on Sunday. The dead are Monir Hossain, 30, a constable of Gazipur Police Lines, and Surjo Mandol, 70, a pedestrian. Monir Hossain hailed from Mymensingh district and was posted at Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur district and Surjo Mandol hailed from Dukhiabari of Mulibari area under Sadar upazila of Sirajganj district. Muktar Hossain, additional superintend of police (ASP), said both died on the spot. Quoting locals police said the van, on its way to a Sirajganj court from Gazipur's Kashimpur prison, overturned on the Dhaka-Sirajganj highway in Mulibari area when its driver lost control over the wheels after hitting the pedestrian around 9:00am. Among the injured, constables Sanwar Hossain, Nur-e-Alam and Enamul Hossan, were admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital. The policemen were taking a group of convicts from Gazipur to produce them before the Sirajganj court, according to a news agency.
