Cops intercept Tuba workers, club them in Karwan Bazar

The workers of Tuba Group staged demonstration in front of the building of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in Karwan Bazar in the city on Tuesday morning for unpaid salary and outstanding allowances. Workers allaged that police intercepted them at several places when they started a procession peacefully from in front of Hossain Super Market at Badda on their way to Karwan Bazar to gather their and stage the demonstrating there. One of the leaders of the agitating workers said the workers went to Karwan Bazar to lay siege to the BGMEA building to realise their demands, including payment of three-month’s outstanding salaries and Eid bonus to them by Tuba management. Witnesses said police charged batons on the demonstrators when the Tuba Group garment workers tried to lay siege to the BGMEA headquarters at Karwan Bazar in the morning. As per their scheduled programme, several hundreds of workers gathered in front of the BGMEA building in the morning. When they tried to besiege the BGMEA Bhaban around 11:40am, police charged truncheons on the workers. In face of police resistance, the workers were holding a rally, blocking the entrance of the BGMEA headquarters till 1:50pm when the report was filed, according to a news agency.
