SYLHET, Jan 8: In a predawn raid today, police arrested four activists of the ruling party-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in connection with the killing of its activist Tanim Khan.
The arrested are Joynal Abedin Diamond, Ruhel Ahmed, Zakir Ahmed and Syed Abid Ahmed. They were picked up from a house in the Tilagarh area, said Officer-in-Charge of Shahporan Police Station Md Akhtar Hossain.
A group of young men stabbed Tanim indiscriminately near Tilagarh point area about 9:00 pm on Sunday. He was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
However, no class or examination was held today at MC College and Sylhet Government College as a faction of BCL called an indefinite strike in protest against the killing of Tanim. He was known as an activist of the faction led by former organising secretary Ranjit Sarker.
Ranjit has a longstanding rivalry with ward councillor Azadur Rahman Azad over establishing supremacy in the Tilagarh area, locals and police said.
Namaz-e-janaza of Tanim was held at his Nij Burunga village in Osmaninagar upazila this afternoon and later buried at their family graveyard.
Agencies add: academic activities at MC College and Sylhet Government College in the district came to a halt as a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) enforced an indefinite strike on Monday protesting the murder of a fellow activist, report agencies.
Due to the strike, announced by the Ranjit group of BCL, no classes were held at both the colleges since morning.
The authorities of MC College postponed the day's Honours first year examination.
Protesting the killing of Tanim Khan, fellow BCL activists also put up barricade on the road in front of MC College around 11:00 am, halting vehicular movement on both sides.
