FE REPORT | Tuesday, 28 July 2026
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested three members of an organised fraud ring for their alleged involvement in swindling money from people with false promise of solving their personal problems through supernatural powers.
The three individuals were accused of running a fraudulent "Facebook tantrik" ring that extorted women after inflicting severe chemical burns.
Special Superintendent of Police of the PBI SI&O (North) office in South Kalyanpur, Md Fazle Elahi, at a press briefing told the media on Monday (27 July) that investigation began after a woman named Salma Akter filed a case under the Cyber Security Ordinance at Khilkhet Police Station on 21 June.
The three arrestees are Ahid Mia alias Kuwait, Mahe Alam, and Hasan Ali. They were arrested during raids in Cumilla and Noakhali districts on 24 July.
Multiple mobile phones and SIM cards were recovered from their possession.
Mr Md Fazle Elahi said that the victim Salma came in contact with a Facebook account named "Rahmat Ali Kabiraj", which claimed to be operated by a tantrik.
The suspect promised to end her husband's extramarital relationship and first collected Tk1,500 as a religious offering, followed by another Tk 3,500 through bKash on the pretext of buying a Jalali pigeon.
