Cops sued for bribe

Two policemen of Dhaka’s Bhatara Police station have been sued on charges for taking bribe. One Jahangir Miah Ujjwal, claiming to be the editor of a newspaper, filed the case with the court of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate on Thursday. Bhatara police station’s Sub-inspector (SI) Md Israeel and Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Sajal Kanti Heera are defendants in the case. After hearing the matter, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tasruzzaman ordered the Detective Police to probe the matter under the supervision of its Deputy Commissioner in Dhaka and submit the investigation report. Ujjwal was stopped by ASI Heera on Feb 7 at Bhatara’s Noorer Chala area and asked to pay Tk 20,000. He was threatened to be framed on criminal charges if he did not pay up, according to the complainant’s lawyer Mahbub Hasan Rana. Despite identifying himself as a journalist, the police extorted Tk 20,000 from Ujjwal and took his signature on a blank sheet before letting him go, according to bdnews24.com.
