Corporate governance, CSR 'can protect stakeholders' interest'

Better corporate governance and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are key to protecting the interests of the stakeholders of the corporate sector and strengthening the role of the corporate houses in social welfare, a journalists' orientation session was told Wednesday.
It was felt that a pro-active role of the media can promote corporate governance and CSR in Bangladesh and curb corruption, which are closely linked with corporate governance in the present day context. It was also observed that Corporate Governance is one of the important factors determining the level of corruption.
The orientation session on "Corporate Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility" was held at a Hotel in the city, said a press release.
Management and Resources Development Initiative (MRDI) organised the programme, supported by Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), under a project titled "Bridging Corporate Sector and Media in Promoting Good Governance.
Mamun Rashid, Managing Director and Citigroup Country Officer-Bangladesh, Citibank, NA delivered a lecture on Corporate Governance and CSR. He focused on the journalists' understandings and views on Corporate Governance in both world and Bangladesh perspectives and the relations between the corporate sector and the media.
Mamun Rashid said transparency, accountability, control and reputation are the four key words related with Corporate Governance, which must be ensured through the corporate sector's increased efforts to focus on the stakeholders' interests and sharing.
Hasibur Rahman, Executive Director, MRDI, gave the welcome address and moderated the programme attended by a total of 25 business and economic reporters from different national dailies, news agencies and electronic media.
MRDI has been working to consolidate a critical mass of business/economic journalists through a number of activities with business/economic reporters.
