Saturday, 4 December 2010

CHITTAGONG, Dec 3: Speakers at a workshop on accessing industrial credit have suggested running the state-owned commercial banks (SCBs) without any political interference and leave the power with branches of SCBs to take decisions on selecting the projects for granting loans.
They opined that concerned branch managers and officers should provide industrial loans to projects according to their field survey and past experience under liberal guidelines to be fixed up by the government holding them responsible for realising the disbursed money.
The discussants were giving views in the workshop on Reducing Corruption in Accessing Industrial Credit organised by International Business Forum of Bangladesh (IBFB) on Thursday at a hotel in the city.
Veteran banker Professor Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled presented his study paper on the issue and made a number of recommendations and observations on access to credit and corruption issue in state-owned commercial banks.
Industries Minister Dilip Barua addressed the function as chief guest. The function was chaired by IBFB president and former mayor of Chittagong Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury while it was moderated by senior journalist Zahiduzzaman Faruq.
