Corruption in private universities
Friday, 11 July 2014
A research finding of the Transparency International Bangladesh has revealed that many private universities in the country are involved in widespread corruption. They are reported to have transacted illegal money for getting approval for launching campuses and awarding certificates. These are really alarming.
While releasing the research findings, the TIB said that the study was done on 22 randomly selected private universities over a period of two years starting from May 2012. Due to such dishonest practices by the highest seats of learning, the common people will lose their confidence in private universities and many students will have to go abroad for higher studies.
Education is the backbone of a nation and if we weaken our backbone, our future will lie in uncertainty. I would like to thank the TIB for revealing the state of affairs in educational institutions. The government should eliminate anomalies from the education sector and make it more transparent. The private universities should not work for mere profit earning. It should produce enlightened manpower. Private universities emerged with the need of the time as the public universities cannot accommodate all the aspiring students who want to go for higher studies.
Many guardians opt for sending their children to private universities because these are free from session jams and partisan politics. If the government takes stern action against the unscrupulous people behind private universities and also against the corrupt elements of the government's regulating bodies, the situation will improve and the quality and standard will be restored in the private universities.
