Cos skirt electronic cash register, says NBR boss
FE Report | Friday, 10 July 2015
The NBR chief on Thursday admitted that the progress of its electronic cash register (ECR) programme was being held back as companies tend to avoid its use.
Many companies are escaping the ECR transaction intentionally making the system ineffective, he said.
Value Added Tax (Vat) intelligence office has already detected some of the evaders and imposed penalty on them, he added.
Md Nojibur Rahman, chairman of the NBR, expressed his displeasure at the non-compliance by a section of businesses at a press briefing held in the city.
The NBR arranged the briefing to announce its programmes marking the National VAT Day-2015 today (Friday).
"We'll see the scope of such revenue leakage through Vat online project," Mr Rahman said.
The NBR will hold a week-long programme featuring exchange of views, award-giving ceremony for top Vat payers, rally, TV talk shows, supplement in newspapers, documentary, mobile SMS, poster, stickers, bill board, festoon, motivational campaign on new law at the national and regional level.
Responding to a question, the NBR boss alleged that honest Vat officials are being harassed by a section of businesses, which hampers proper performing of their duties.
"The NBR will be tough on both taxmen and taxpayers for harassing each others," he added.
He said the online system will help resolve the hassles with payment and collection of vat.
The new Vat and supplementary duty law will come into force from July 1, 2016 to automate the system.
"We'll keep close contact with Anti Corruption Commission, Comptroller and Auditor General's office and Information Commission to ensure access to information and smooth activity," he added.
He also vowed to strengthen alternative dispute resolution to realise substantial revenues that got stuck up with four state-owned gas companies.
He said the revenue board is going to observe the national Vat day for the fifth time to make businesses aware of proper depository of consumers' tax.
The theme of the VAT day is-'Pay Vat timely and contribute to building the nation'.
