Costlier ata

Friday, 27 July 2007

COARSE flour or ata, as we all call it, is now being sold at Tk 29 per kg as if it has registered a new height of its dignity. The girl at our residence bought two packets of the Pusti brand ata, each containing two kgs, for Tk 116 the other day, on July 22 last.
Two days earlier, a local TV channel showed some flour mills of Narayanganj and interviewed their owners about their wheat stock positions. They said their stocks are fast depleting and could exhaust soon as supply has shrunk. Importers, they said, are scarcely importing wheat. We could guess that coarse flour would soon catch wind to high fly.
Is the government aware of the position and doing something to stop coarse flour prices from skyrocketing?
