RAJSHAHI, Oct 9: At least 2.0 million tonnes of super fine rice are being processed in fifty automatic rice mills of northwestern region of the country.
The production of the super fine rice has surpassed the local demand. As a result, the surplus quantity of those is now being exported.
According to sources, a few years ago, the country used to import 0.5 to 0.8 million tonnes of super fine rice like minicate and aromatic fine rice (Chini Atap) from India, Pakistan, China, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand.
But now, the country has achieved self-sufficiency in fine and super fine rice production and exporting 0.2 to 0.3 million tonnes every year.
At present, there are 18 automatic rice mills in Dinajpur, 15 in Naogaon, seven in Chapainawabganj, three in Kushtia, four in Joypurhat, three in Bogra and one each in Comilla and Rajshahi districts.
Fifteen of such mills, which have been imported from Japan, Korea, China and India, use computerised system to sort and process rice.
In 15 automatic rice mills, computerised 'Colour Star' machines are used to separate dead rice, black rice, red-rice, coarse rice, pieces of stones, sand and soil from rice and to pack the same sized and same quality rice.
Rice traders in Rajshahi said, best quality minicate rice is being sold at Tk 42 per kilogramme and the aromatic Atap rice is being sold at taka 110 per kilogramme at the wholesale markets.
Automatic rice mill owners, however, said that the production cost at the automatic rice mills has risen due to increased use of electricity. The mills use electricity in various phases resulting a higher production cost.
