'Country got record amount of foreign aid last fiscal'

FE Report | Tuesday, 29 July 2008

Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Md Aminul lslam Bhuiyan said Monday Bangladesh received a record amount of foreign assistance in the last fiscal year.

Contradicting the figures published in the Bangladesh Economic Survey (BES) 2008, he said the volume of external assistance pledged and disbursed by donors also marked a substantial rise in the last fiscal.

The FE last Saturday published a report on the foreign aid on the basis of statistics furnished in the BES, 2008, prepared by the ministry of finance.

The BES used the ERD as its source of information to say that the country received foreign assistance of $1127 million in the 2007-08 fiscal compared to $1630.58 million in the 2006-07 fiscal.

The BES is often found to include incomplete data on various sectors of the economy, leading to confusions among various stakeholders and potential investors.
