Country has ‘sufficient stock of urea’ for Boro season

The country has sufficient stock of urea fertiliser to meet the demand during the upcoming Boro season and the government is cautious about fertiliser reaching the farmers on time.
Adviser for Law and Information Barrister Mainul Hosein said this after attending the 22nd meeting of the Advisers Committee on Purchase in the city Wednesday, reports BSS.
The law adviser presided over the meeting.
Among others, Communications Adviser Maj Gen (retd) MA Matin and Industries Adviser Geeteara Safiya Chowdhury attended the meeting.
Cabinet Secretary Ali Imam Majumder and Additional Secretary of the Industries Ministry Ayub Mia were also present at the meeting.
The law adviser said there is a stock of 0.44 million tonnes of urea fertiliser at present and it was 0.26 million tonnes at the same period of last year.
He said there would be no crisis of urea fertiliser in the country and if there is any problem in distribution, the government will take necessary measures to solve that.
Despite this, the government has decided to purchase sufficient quantity of fertiliser to meet the demand for the season, he added.
The law adviser said the meeting approved import of 1,37,500 tonnes of urea fertiliser and 50,000 tonnes of phosphoric acid as a raw material for producing urea in the country.
During the briefing, Additional Secretary of the Industries Ministry Ayub Mia said the government approved import of 75,000 tonnes of bagged urea and another 62,500 tonnes of granular urea fertiliser.
He said the government will import about 0.90 million tonnes of fertiliser this year. Of this, 0.20 million tonnes have already been imported, 0.20 million tonnes of fertiliser in the pipeline and the import of 1,37,500 tonnes was approved on the day.
The government will procure 0.45 million tonnes of fertiliser from the KAFCO this year of which, 0.13 million tonnes of fertiliser have already been collected, he pointed out.
