Bangladesh has no comprehensive database of various species available in the country, department of environment (DoE) officials revealed Wednesday.
Biodiversity has a direct relation to our food security, climate change and population, so implementation of a biodiversity friendly, sustainable management is impossible without correct information of species but we have no comprehensive database said the officials.
Officials said these at the launching ceremony of a report titled "biodiversity national assessment and programme of action 2020" organized by DoE, held at LGED Bhaban in the city.
Dr Hasan Mahmud, state minister for environment and forests addressed the programme as the chief guest while Monowar Islam, director general, DoE presided.
Abdus Sobahan, Assistant director general, DoE, Abdul Motaleb, chief conservator of forest (CCF) among others spoke as special guests.
Sulaiman Haider, project director, 'action programme 2020' presented the keynote paper.
"The extinction rate of species is now 1000 time than the natural rate and it is alarming situation," said Hasan Mahmud.
"To ensure a sustaining life on earth for our descendants we must have to protect our biodiversity. To protect it we have to change our approach towards nature," said Mahmud.
Monowar Islam emphasized on the formulation of an inventory of species in our country following the Indian model.
India has prepared a comprehensive record of species titled "Wealth of India" and involved the local government and educational institutions to this scientific process.
Abdus Sobahan said that the loss of biodiversity means the loss of our life support system.
