Thursday, 1 February 2018
The country has about 4.3 million new voters, according to a voter list finalised by the Election Commission (EC) ahead of the next national polls, reports bdnews24.com.
The total number of voters now stands at 104.1 million in the final count after the removal of 1.7 million dead voters from the current list, according to the Election Commission's updated electoral roll published on Wednesday.
The Election Commission has signed in about 21.5 million people as voters in the last 10 years.
Those signed up as voters since 2008 are now aged between 18 and 28. The Election Working Group is viewing the pool as the prime force for the upcoming election.
"The young voters are progressive in nature. They will cast ballots consciously," EWG Director Abdul Alim said.
He claimed NID distribution has encouraged citizens to exercise their franchise while the number of female voters in remote rural areas has also increased. The men-women ratio is balanced overall, he added.
According to EC officials, 2.5 million voters are added to the voters' pool a year; those who turn 18 get registered on January 1.
