Country in deep political crisis: Dr Kamal

Gano Forum (GF) announced on Saturday a 101-member new committee with Dr Kamal Hossain as president and Dr Md Mizanur Rahman general secretary.
GF's newly-selected general secretary Dr Md Mizanur Rahman read out the names of the new committee at a press briefing at Zahoor Hossain Chowdhury Hall at the National Press Club in the city on Saturday.
Speaking at the event Dr Kamal Hossain said the electoral system of the country is now being questioned and on the verge of collapse.
He said that the Election Commission (EC)'s decision to hold the next parliamentary elections by using electoral voting machine or EVMs at 150 constituencies despite strong opposition by political parties is just an ominous sign.
"The country is now in deep political crisis. Democracy is now being expelled from the country. The prevailing anarchic situation in the country happened due to anti-democratic activities done by the present autocratic government," he said.
Terming the present situation in Bangladesh miserable, he said law and order in the country has collapsed. Even opposition parties cannot hold meetings peacefully, he alleged.
Dr Hossain, one of the main pioneers in drafting Bangladesh's Constitution, also said that those who are ruling the country have utterly failed to fulfill their commitments to the people.
"The hard-earned money of the country is being laundered by the high-ups in the country," he maintained.
"Now it is our duty to save the country. The best and effective way to save the country is to hold an independent and neural election," he added.
The members of the presidential council of GF are: AHM Khalequzzaman, Dr Kamal Hossain, Mofizul Islam Khan Kamal, SM Altaf Hossain, Mokabbir Khan, Abdul Aziz, Santipado Gosh, AOM Shafiullah, Mezbah Uddin Ahmed, Momen Chowdhury, Mostaque Ahmed, Dr Abdullah Al Mamun, Selim Akbar, Suraiya Begum, Abdur Rahman Jahangir, Harunur Rasheed Talukder and Ismail Hossain.
Joint general secretaries are Md Mahfuzur Rahman and Shafiqur Rahman Khan Bacchu.
Shah Md Nuruzzaman has been named treasury secretary, Principal Md Yasin organising secretary, Jahirul Islam Jahir office secretary and MA Wahab publicity secretary.
The GF, literally People's Forum, was formed through a split of the Awami League and the merger of civil society groups in 1992.
