Country needs 66,574 more policemen: Sahara

Bangladesh needs 66,574 more policemen to maintain law and order as there are 139,470 police personnel in the country against the demand of 206,044, Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun told the House, reports BSS.
Replying to a question from Jatiya Party (JP) member Hafizuddin Ahmed, the minister said there is one policeman for every 728 people in India, while the ratio in Pakistan is one against 625 people and one against 249 people in Malaysia.
"If the ratio of police and people in Bangladesh is similar to India, the country needs 2,06,044 policemen," she said.
The home minister said the number of existing manpower in BDR is now 44,000 against the demand of 44,699.
"There are 7,222 jail police against the demand of 9,136, while the number of vacant posts in the Fire Service and Civil Defence Department is 455," she said.
