Country on highway to election: President

President Iajuddin Ahmed Wednesday said the country was now on the highway to the upcoming general elections, reports BSS.
"I call upon all concerned to extend whole-hearted cooperation in this regard," he said while addressing the graduation ceremony of the National Defence Course (NDC) and Armed Forces War Course (AFWC), 2008 at the National Defence College at Mirpur in the city.
Commandant of the NDC Lt Gen Mohammad Aminul Karim gave the address of welcome on the occasion.
Forty-five senior army and civil officials including 22 officers from 11 countries- China, India, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Nepal, Pakistan and Myanmar- completed the NDC course in 2008.
In AFWC, 22 senior officials from Bangladesh Army, navy and air forces participated.
Congratulating the graduating officers, Iajuddin said the participants of NDC and AFWC would contribute more in nation building activities through their knowledge and professionalism.
"I urge you to utilise the knowledge that you have gained from this course for enhancement of the security and development of the nation," he said.
Terming the graduating foreign officers as good-will ambassadors, the President said the cordial relations among Bangladesh and their countries would be further strengthened and deepened through this course.
"I personally extend my sincere appreciation to the governments of 11 countries for sending their officers to this institution," he said.
The ceremony was attended by senior civil and military officials, including Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman.
Since its inception, the college conducted 10 national defence courses and eight AFWC. So far, 89 army, 27 navy, 26 air force, 69 civil service and 56 overseas members from 12 countries had successfully graduated from the National Defence Courses, NDC sources said.
The NDC course graduates comprising major generals, brigadier generals and equivalent from defence forces and joint secretaries and equivalents from civil services, are contributing substantially in their respective fields at home and abroad, it said.
