Fire guts 10 dwellings
JHALAKATI, Dec 24: At least 10 houses were gutted in a devastating fire at Kalyankati housing project under Sadar Upazila Saturday. Local people said the blaze originated from the kitchen of a house and soon engulfed nine other adjacent houses. On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after two hours of frantic efforts. The affected house owners claimed that cash and valuables worth over Tk 0.2 million were gutted in the fire. — UNB
One killed, 23 injured in road mishap
FARIDPUR, Dec 24: Mirajul Kazi (25), a bus helper, was killed and 23 others injured when a bus plunged into a roadside ditch at Satoir Bazar under Boalmari Upazila Monday. Witnesses said the Boalmari-bound bus fell into the ditch at about 11:30 am as the driver lost control over the steering, killing its conductor on the spot and injuring the 23 passengers. Police later recovered the body of Mirajul and sent it to Faridpur Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. The injured were admitted to Baolmari Hospital and Faridpur Medical College Hospital. —UNB
One killed by miscreants
SIRAJGANJ, Dec 24: A young man was killed by unidentified assailants at Goprekha village under Belkuchi Upazila on the Eid day. Police said Alam (25), of Chandangati village in the upazila went to his father-in-law's house. But he went out of the house at the call of some unknown young men after sun down and remained missing. Later, local people found the body of Alam that bore marks of stab injury in a mustard field Saturday and informed the police. The reason behind the murder could not be known immediately. — UNB
Robbers loot valuables from house
KUSHTIA, Dec 24: Armed robbers looted cash and valuables worth Tk 0.1 million from a house at Chilmari Bangla Bazar under Daulatpur Upazila Friday night. Local people said the bandits numbering 10/12 stormed into the house of Bazlur Rahman at 11:00 pm. They kept the house inmates' hostage at gunpoint and stabbed the house owner indiscriminately when he tried to resist them. Later, they looted Tk 30,000 in cash and other valuables. Hearing the hue and cry local people gave the robbers a hot chased and at one stage caught one of the robbers identified as Anowar Hossain (35). He was handed over to the police. The injured house owner was admitted to a local hospital in a critical condition. Another report says that a gang of terrorists raided the house of Box Sardar at Futani Bazar under Daulatpur Upazila and stabbed his wife to death Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Katchamon Nesa (60). The reason behind the killing could not be known immediately. A case was filed in this connection. — UNB
Slaughtered body recovered from paddy field
JESSORE, Dec 24: The slaughtered body of a middle-aged man was recovered from a paddy field at Ektapur village under Manirampur Upazila Saturday. Local people said Paritosh Das (47), son of late Bolaichandra Das went out of his house Friday and he didn't return home the whole night. Later, his body was found in a paddy field. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy. Reason behind the killing could not be known immediately. A UD case was filed. — UNB

JAMALPUR, Dec 24: A woman was killed allegedly her three sons at Pochabohola village under Islampur Upazila Saturday night. Local people said Abdus Salam, Hafez Abul Hossain and Babul strangulated their mother Saleha Begum (55) to death following a quarrel over her insurance money. Villagers came to know of the incident when the sons were trying to bury the body of their mother Sunday morning. They said her sons put pressure on her to draw Tk 48,000 of her insurance money, which she time and again refused. On the fateful night they picked up a quarrel over the issue and at one stage strangulated her to death. The sons went into hiding when the local people informed the police. — UNB
