Country's destiny to be determined by its people alone: Adviser

Tuesday, 24 July 2007

The destiny of Bangladesh will be determined by Bangladeshi people alone and no outside pressure can or will influence its politics.
Adviser for Foreign Affairs Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury said this to journalists after meeting with French Ambassador in Bangladesh Jacque Andre Costilhes at the foreign ministry office in the city Monday, reports UNB.
"Everyone has a right to have views, but focus of an envoy should naturally be to strengthen bilateral relations", Chowdhury said.
He made the remark in response to a question if the adviser thought foreign ambassadors should discuss Bangladeshi political issues in public.
He said they discussed a four-month-long exhibition on Bangladeshi art and culture scheduled to be inaugurated on October 23 in Paris.
The adviser said Bangladesh enjoys a very rich heritage that the French in particular and Europeans in general appreciate.
"The exhibition will most certainly project a very positive image of our art and culture, which in turn will contribute to a deeper understanding of our nation by the Europeans", he said.
He expressed the hope that economic and commercial benefits would accrue to the nation's coffers from that.
