Saturday, 11 April 2009

CHITTAGONG, Apr 10 (BSS): Chittagong Metropoli-tan Police (CMP) Friday launched a unique Criminal Database System (CDS) with fingerprint identification to enable the law enforcers to detect the identity of criminals within the shortest possible time.
Speakers at a function on the occasion said the first ever such automation system would greatly help curb crimes and militancy to carry forward the concept of building the Digital Bangladesh as announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Shipping Minister Dr M Afsarul Amin inaugurated the CDS at a local hotel saying detection of the identity of any criminal or militant was as important as diagnosing the disease first in medical science.
"This system will help a lot in investigating the criminal incidents and curbing crime properly," he said terming introduction of the new system very timely and an important initiative.
Dr Amin said such efforts would immensely help the government materialise the dream of building the Digital Bangladesh within 2021, when the country would celebrate the Golden Jubilee of its hard-earned Independence.
Referring to the August 21 grenade attacks on Sheikh Hasina at Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka, bomb ambush at Kotalipara and bomb explosions inside cinema halls in Mymensingh, the Shipping Minister said capacity building of police department had now become an urgent need of the time to combat crime and militancy.
"The law enforcers were not allowed to perform their responsibilities independently in the past but present government was fully committed to raise their capacity and professionalism through various time-befitting efforts," he said.
Dr Amin called upon the police personnel to be more aware and capable of handling properly the criminals and militants as well as those trying to destabilise the country's peaceful atmosphere through provocative activities.
CMP initially brought a part of its jurisdiction -- Doublemooring Zone comprising Pahartali, Halishahar and Doublemoorning police stations -- under the system to assess its effectiveness.
With CMP Commissioner M Moniruzzaman in the chair, Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority Commodore RU Ahmed, DIG of Police (Chittagong Range) M Asaduzzaman Mia, Chairman of Corporate IT Ltd Mohammad Sajjadul Hasan and Deputy Commissioner (Port Zone) of CMP Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain, among others, spoke at the function.
Under the new system, police will preserve 48 types of information including forensic and DNA reports about the suspected and arrested criminals, fingerprints, criminal's previous backgrounds as well as their addresses and photographs.
