Country's first digital insurance plan for cancer treatment

Rubayat Saleheen | Saturday, 4 February 2023

Cancer, a disease that has been affecting people for centuries, has reached epidemic proportions in recent times. The cost of cancer treatment in Bangladesh is substantial, with an average cancer patient incurring expenses of BDT 639,000 per annum. This number can go up two to ten times more as recovery often takes years. Needless to mention, the exorbitant costs incurred from the medical consultation, surgery, therapeutic procedures and medications of cancer patients emerge as a catastrophic financial blow upon most families within our developing economy. Studies suggest that only 25% of Bangladeshi cancer patients have the financial means to avail proper treatment, which is why many families are forced to deplete their savings, seek financial assistance, or rely on non-profit cancer aid organisations.
With the surge in cancer rates, particularly among young people, it's important to take preventive measures to minimize the risk and have financial backup in case of an unfortunate diagnosis. As we celebrate World Cancer Day 2023 and its theme of "Close the Care Gap," Guardian Life Insurance Ltd, Bangladesh's fastest growing insurer, is proud to do its part to bridge the gap in care for cancer patients and their families. They have recently launched Guardian Cancer Care - country's first ever digital insurance plan for cancer treatment.

Guardian Cancer Care is an innovative insurance plan that will financially safeguard policyholders in case they are diagnosed with cancer in the future. In a country where universal health care still remains a far-fetched dream, it is a timely initiative by Guardian Life to financially safeguard individuals and their families whose lives and financial security can be dismantled in the aftermath of a critical illness such as cancer.
With coverage starting from BDT 5 Lakh and going up to BDT 20 Lakh, the insurance plan offers policyholders the opportunity to reduce the financial burden of cancer treatment. The annual premiums, starting from BDT 150/year, are more affordable than what people spend on junk food or cigarettes in a day! With the coverage amount, policyholders can be equipped to cover a substantial portion or the entire treatment cost in case of a future cancer diagnosis.
Key features of the insurance plan include 100% sum assured payable on diagnosis of major-stage cancer, 25% sum assured payable on diagnosis of early-stage cancer, waiver on future premiums for the next three policy years upon cancer diagnosis, and the option to choose between Guardian Cancer Care Silver and Guardian Cancer Care Gold. The eligibility criteria for the insurance plan include an age limit of 18-55 years and a health questionnaire to determine the policyholder's fitness.
As we celebrate World Cancer Day 2023, let's take a pledge to educate ourselves on cancer, take routine cancer screening tests, and take the proactive measures to prevent cancer or prepare ahead for a future cancer diagnosis.
