Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman said Thursday the country can become a middle income nation within this decade if its major sectors continue to perform well in the coming years.
"The thrust sectors like agriculture, remittance, exports and ICT can help us attain the country's desired economic growth," Mr Rahman said while speaking at a function in the capital.
The Institute of Bankers, Bangladesh (IBB) organised the 'Ninth Prize Distribution Ceremony' at a city hotel, where 43 officials from different banks received gold and silver medals for their outstanding results in the banking diploma examination in 2006-07.
The central bank governor said the country's economy is stable thanks to the growth of the agriculture, readymade garment and remittance sectors amid the global economic crisis.
"Sectors like pharmaceuticals, IT communications, ceramics and shipbuilding are very promising for the economy besides other major successful sectors," he said.
Mr Rahman said Bangladesh is on the verge of attaining self-sufficiency in food due to smooth supply of agricultural ingredients to the farmers.
"Our agro-based industry has also expanded. All these signs indicate that the country can become a middle income nation within this decade if its major sectors continue to perform well in the coming years," he added.
