Bangladeshi products have huge export potential in South African countries which have long been untapped thanks to lack of export strategies from the successive governments, observed a government delegation.
The delegation, led by Foreign Secretary Mijarul Kayes, visited four African countries to explore the markets for goods from Bangladesh.
Besides goods export, exploring opportunity to export manpower to African countries was another agenda of the official delegation.
The countries visited by the mission are Ivory Cost, Ghana, Liberia and Senegal.
The delegation in its recommendations said ready-made garments, jute and jute products, leather, footwear, frozen fish, pharmaceuticals, ceramic tableware, glass sheet and agro-processed food have enormous demand in those countries.
The delegation submitted its report to Foreign Minister Dipu Moni for the next course of action.
"To diversify the country's export destinations and explore new markets, we need to look beyond the traditional export markets in Europe and the USA," a senior official of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) said.
Bangladesh can easily export its products to African countries as the quality of its products is high and the prices are cheaper than those of many other countries, he said.
The country's export earning was worth only $0.33 million while it imported goods worth $5.36 million in 2008-09 fiscal from Ivory Cost, according to official data.
According to official statistics, Bangladesh exports goods worth less than $4.0 million to these four African countries per year.
