Countrywide birth registration begins

Wednesday, 4 July 2007

The universal birth registration programme began across the country Tuesday with a target to register the birth of each and every citizen of the country free of cost by mid 2008, reports UNB
"Today, the 3rd July, is the first birth registration day. Birth registration is now compulsory to get 16 basic services for every citizen," said LGED Adviser Anwarul Iqbal.
He was addressing a function at the Osmani Memorial Hall, marking the Birth Registration Day at National Level.
The government declared July 3 as Birth Registration Day to highlight its importance. The birth registration programme was launched with assistance from the Netherlands, the European Commission and the Asian Development Bank and Unicef.
The LGED Advisor said a birth certificate serves as a legal age verification document acknowledging one's existence and status before the law and thus establishing every one's right to an identity.
The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives organised the function supported by Unicef and Dhaka City Corporation.
The Adviser urged the people of all walks of life to come forward for successful implementation of the birth registration programme. "Birth registration will be considered as crosscutting issue."
Emphasising the role of teachers, Anwarul Iqbal said some 23 per cent of the country's total population are studying in various educational institutions. "We can easily register those major portion of the people with the help of teachers," he said.
