Countywide fish fairs begin

Fish fairs started throughout the country to observe the 'Native Fish Conservation and Extension Campaign Fortnight-2007' programme launched by the Department of Fisheries (DoF), reports BSS.
In Rajshahi, a seven-day Divisional Fish Fair- 2007 began on the Fisheries Building premises Monday, aimed at making the fish farming more popular among general masses.
Some 15 fish cultivation and related stalls were set up at the fair.
Commissioner of Rajshahi Division Shafiul Alam attended the inaugural session as the chief guest with DoF Deputy Director Shawkat Ali in the chair. Among others, fisheries scientist Anwar Hossain and fish farmer ABM Musa spoke on the occasion.
Speakers said adherence to the Fisheries Act along with self-restraint is very essential for conservation of the native fish species. Similarly, the indigenous fish species could easily be conserved through establishment of fish sanctuary. The fishermen have vital role in this connection, they said.
A seven-day fish fair began also at Comilla on the Eidgah premises in the town Monday.
Chittagong Division Fisheries Department organised the fair as a part of their ongoing campaign for preservation and expansion of indigenous species of fish.
Deputy Commissioner of Comilla Mohammad Manjurur Rahman inaugurated the fair.
Divisional Fisheries Officer Mohammad Abdul Aziz and District Fisheries Officer Murad Hossain, among others, were present on the occasion.
A total of 18 stalls have been set up at the fair.
In Sylhet, a fish fair began on the premises of the district fisheries department Sunday.
