Court frees AL's Saber Hossain, grants him bail in 6 cases
FE REPORT | Wednesday, 9 October 2024
Saber Hossain Chowdhury, a former Awami League (AL) lawmaker and former minister of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, was freed from jail on Tuesday after securing bail in all six cases filed against him.
Considering his bail petitions, Ziadur Rahman and Md Mehedi Hasan, metropolitan magistrates, granted him bail in the cases filed with Paltan and Khilgaon police stations.
Lawyer Muhammad Morshed Hossain, who appeared in the court hearing on behalf of Saber Hossain, confirmed the court order to the FE.
The lawyer said they sought bail on the grounds that Saber Hossain fell ill during a remand interrogation in a case filed over the killing of BNP activist Mokbul in Dhaka's Paltan on 7 December, 2022.
'He should be granted bail on humanitarian grounds', according to the petition quoted by the lawyer.
Of the cases, two murder cases were filed with Paltan Model Police Station, while four other cases, including two murder cases, were filed with Khilgaon police station.
After the bail order, Saber's lawyer furnished bail bonds in all six cases.
Afterwards, the officer-in-charge of the prison cell at the court verified the bail bonds and released Saber Hossain from the custody around 6:40 pm on Tuesday, said lawyer Morshed Hossain.
Shortly after the bail order, pro-BNP lawyers demonstrated opposing the bail and chanted slogans using abusive language targeting the magistrate in the courtroom.
Earlier in the day, he was produced before the court before the expiry of his five-day remand in the case filed over the killing of BNP activist Mokbul.
On October 7 this year, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubul Haque placed Saber Hossain on a five-day remand in the case.
