JESSORE, Dec 3: A local court Thursday granted seven-day remand for Mufti Abdul Hannan, the leader of Harkatul Jihad (Huji) in Udichi bombing case.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Mostafizur Rahman approved the remand prayer after Abdul Kayyum Shikdar, assistant superintendent of police of the criminal investigation department and also the investigation officer of the case sought seven-day remand for Hannan.
Mufti Hannan was brought to Jessore Central Jail Wednesday night from Dhaka Central Jail and was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court at around 10.05 am.
Mufti Hannan himself appealed for cancellation of remand in absence of any lawyer for him. 'I was not involved in the incident of Udichi. I never came to Jessore. It is the government that included my name in the case only to harass me', Hannan told the court, said court sources.
The court rejected his plea and approved the remand and sent him to Jessore Central Jail at about 10.30 am.
A total of 10 persons were killed and over 150 were wounded in two separate bomb blasts at Munshi Meherullah Maidan at the cultural function of the 12th annual national conference of Udichi on March 06, 1999.
On May 30, 2006, a Jessore court pronounced the verdict of the case in which all the 24 accused were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
