A Dhaka court has sentenced Regent Hospital Chairman Mohammad Shahed alias Shahed Karim to life imprisonment in a case related to the illegal possession of firearms, reports bdnews24.com.
Special Tribunal-1 Judge KM Imrul Kayes passed the order on Monday.
Prosecutors Abdullah Abu and Tapos Paul represented the state in court while lawyer Md Moniruzzaman defended Shahed.
Among the dozens of cases filed against Shahed, this is the first in which a verdict has been delivered.
The sentence was meted out under section 19 (A) of the Firearms Act. Shahed was also handed seven years in prison under another provision of the Act. The two sentences were combined by the court to send Shahed to prison for life in the case.
The Regent Hospital boss, who was in court, appeared impassive when the verdict was announced, according to the prosecutors. Shahed's legal team, however, said they will appeal against the verdict.
The Rapid Action Battalion arrested Shahed, charged with a series of frauds, including fake COVID-19 test reports issued by Regent Hospital, when he was reportedly trying to flee to India by a boat on July 16.
