Court refuses to shift BUET student Sunny murder case
Urges River Police to finish probe
Tuesday, 28 April 2026
A Dhaka court has directed the River Police to expedite their investigation and submit the probe report in the murder case of Tarikuzzaman Sunny, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman passed the order after the Kutubpur River Police Outpost failed to submit the report by the scheduled deadline, reports bdnews24.com.
The court has fixed Jun 2 as the new date for submission.
During the proceedings, the victim's brother and complainant, Hasanuzzaman, filed a petition seeking to transfer the investigation from the River Police to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
Represented by lawyer Abu Tayeb, the complainant argued that the River Police had made no significant progress since taking over the case on Jul 15, 2022.
The petition noted that the lack of momentum in investigating the death of a meritorious student was making the prospect of justice "uncertain".
The plea urged the court to hand over the case to a specialised unit like the CID or PBI, citing their expertise in modern information technology.
The court rejected the transfer application, instead opting to press the current investigators for results.
Sunny, a final-year student of the Department of Architecture at BUET, went missing on the afternoon of Jul 14, 2022, while visiting Moinot Ghat in Dhaka's Dohar Upazila with a group of 15 friends.
His body was recovered from the Padma River the next morning.
Hasanuzzaman subsequently filed a murder case at Dohar Police Station, naming all 15 friends who accompanied Sunny on the trip as suspects.
