RANGPUR, Nov 10: The sale of sacrificial cows is still low in different cattle markets of Rangpur district because the consumers are seemingly reluctant to eat beef despite the fact there is no more reports of Anthrax attack in the country in the last few weeks.
According to sources some owners are not taking their cows in the cattle markets since the traders are not interested enough in buying cows anticipating loss.
Sources said, more than 15,000 cows are being reared in the district. Even many women are rearing cows for sale on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha. But they are not taking their animals to hats due to absence of buyers.
It may be mentioned that there are more than 20 cattle hats in the districts. A small sized cows is being sold between Tk 9000 to 15000, a medium sized at Tk between 18,000 to 25,000 while a large sized cow is sold between Tk 40,000 and 80,000.
Mr. Alam Miah owner of a cow rearing farm at Rangpur sadar told the FE he has more than 30 cows in his shed. He expected that he would be able to get handsome profit by selling them at the time of Eid-ul-Azha, but his hope appears bleak now.
Asadul Islam a cattle trader at Lalbag cattle market in Rangpur city said last year the traders brought a large numbers of cows in the hat but the picture is different now as the number of buyers is low this year. He hoped that the number of buyers will increase during the rest of the days before Eid.
