Cows dying before Eid

Sunday, 5 October 2014

In the last three days several cows have died in cattle markets in different areas of the country. Government officials said the animals were dying because of travel fatigue and overfeeding. Chittagong District’d Additional Livestock Officer Farhad Hossain said four cows died in the port city’s Sagorika cattle market on Sunday. Several cows also died on Friday and Saturday. Chittagong City Corporation, the authority that leases out these markets, says 30 animals have died so far. Sagorika and Bibirhat cattle markets are the largest Eid cattle markets in Chittagong division. Farhad Hossain said sellers tend to overfeed the cattle to make them look fat. But he said altogether 10 to 12 cows had died. Meanwhile, several cows died in different cattle markets in Feni, Comilla and Noakhali. ‘Some cows died for food poisoning and some due to travel fatigue,’ said the members of the medical teams inspecting the markets, according to a news agency.
